Apley Farming & Conservation

Our farming partnership farms some 2,800 acres of land on the Apley and Betchworth Estates. On the Apley land we grow a variety of combinable crops including wheat and oil seed rape as well as a small number of potatoes. We also rear beef cattle which are sold through the local Bridgnorth livestock market.

At Betchworth where the land is much heavier, our principal enterprise is beef cattle with a much smaller arable acreage. A significant amount of arable production in Betchworth is oats which are then used in racehorse feeds.

The Higher Level Stewardship will also enable us to restore the parkland at Betchworth and Apley to reflect the original 18th century designs.

We also have a management agreement with English Heritage for the maintenance of Pan Pudding Hill, an important historical site at Bridgnorth, which was once a motte and bailey castle. During the Civil War Cromwell’s troops raised the height of the motte to allow their cannons a better shot at Bridgnorth Castle.
